Australian artists, designers, architects and urban planners continue to hold a prescence in the Chinese design and build sector.

Jing’an Sculpture Park

Five Australian artists have had their work exhibited at Shanghai’s Jing’an Sculpture Park as part of the Shanghai International Sculpture Biennale.
The 36,000 m2 park is located close to the CBD in Shanghai’s Jing’an District.
The Government of Jing’an District, under the Office of Shanghai Sculpture Committee, funds and supports the Park and its development which was founded in 2010 as part of Shanghai’s World Expo “Better Cities, Better Life” campaign.
Seven sculptures from Australia were selected and installed in the Park as part of this year’s Biennale
Exhibiting Australian artists include Deborah Halpern, Melanie Maclou, Fatih Semiz, Vanessa Stanley and Robin Yakinthou.
“As a significant part of public art, urban sculpture not only reflects the artistry of the sculptor but also reflects the development of culture, economy, and democratic thought,” said Huang Du, a well-known art critic who is also the curator to the Jing’an International Sculpture Project.

The works remain on display until November 20. For more information, visit: www.jisp.cn

CK Designworks’ master plan for the Chinese city of Nanjing takes inspiration from mythology to re-invigorate the city’s Pukou district.
One of the world’s largest design projects, it includes industrial areas, commercial sectors and housing for up to 200,000. The various schools, hospitals, retail and entertainment complexes, and sport facilities will be linked by an elevated rail system.
The buildings will reflect Nanjing’s local folklore, with rain flower pebbles, a brilliant golden butterfly and imagery created by the splash from throwing a stone into water.  The idea is to tell a story with the city re-development, incorporating culture and history into the modern designs.
The Melbourne-based international architects won the project – which has achieved the top rating in Learning, Education, Environment and Design principles – after putting in a design tender during 2010.
