China-based alumni of Australian universities come from various backgrounds and work in diverse professions but they all share one common experience – their lasting connection to Australia.
ACAA HOSTS RECEPTION TO HONOUR THE VISIT OF THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA
On June 11, the ACAA hosted a reception at the Australian Embassy in Beijing to honour the visit of Her Excellency, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and His Excellency, Mr. Michael Bryce AM AC.
The event was opened by the Australian Ambassador to China, Dr. Geoff Raby, who is also patron of the ACAA. The invitation-only reception brought together over 95 alumni, representing all of the ACAA’s 21 university partners and non-university partners.
The Governor-General, herself an alumna from the University of Queensland, congratulated the ACAA in bridging the connection between China-based alumni and their universities.
In her speech, Her Excellency reminded alumni of their roles to their alma mater and importantly their lasting relationship to Australia.
The evening was an opportunity to celebrate the wide ranging achievements of our China-based alumni and the finest of Australian education. Alumni in attendance represented a diverse range of backgrounds and professions but with one common factor – their unique experience and connection to Australia.

EXCLUSIVE ALUMNI GUIDED TOUR OF THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS
Earlier in June, the National Centre for Performing Arts welcomed the ACAA members to an exclusive tour of one of Beijing’s most iconic landmarks. Situated in the heart of downtown Beijing, the NCPA was established in 2007 and works exclusively to showcase the best of Chinese talents and culture and also bring in renowned international performances to China.
The tour was conducted by the Alumni Awards Arts and Culture 2009 winner, Qiao Luqiang, who is also the Director of International Cooperation of the NCPA. Armed with good humour and an extensive knowledge of the NCPA, Luqiang took guests on a unique tour with backstage previews, patiently explaining the architectural style of the Centre. Guests were also treated to glimpses into performance rehearsals.
The tour was a joint event between the ACAA and the Western Returned Scholars Association.
FINALISTS’ RECEPTION AT THE CONSUL GENERAL’S RESIDENCE IN GUANGZHOU
Over in Guangzhou, the successes of our South China based alumni were celebrated at a reception hosted by the new Australian Consul General to Guangzhou, Mr. Grant Dooley.
Held on June 19 at the Residence of the Consul General, the event was an exclusive opportunity for invited guests to meet the new Consul General, network and reconnect with fellow alumni.
Guests in attendance had an opportunity to meet the 2010 Alumni Awards finalists and the chance to enjoy fine Australian wine and canapés in the beautiful Residence.
ACAA IS GROWING THANKS TO YOUR SUPPORT!
Since our launch in 2007, the ACAA database today has over 4,500 members, supporters and partners across China and Australia. We have offices in three major cities – Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou – and look forward to connecting with alumni in other regional cities. The ACAA remains committed to growing our database as a key benefit for our university partners, and to also help alumni connect with each other. Thank you to all members, supporters and partners for your ongoing support! ■
