After a massive expo extravaganza AustCham Shanghai continues the work of supporting and celebrating the growth of Australian businesses and trade reports David Keir, Chair, AustCham Shanghai.
As an Associate Partner of the Australian pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010 AustCham Shanghai was excited to be able to give members access to a myriad of business program events covering all industries. During the last six months the VIP business program hosted almost 15,000 business leaders, many of them AustCham members.
The program showcased distinguished and inspirational Australians who shared the latest information and research to leverage business and trade opportunities with China.
AustCham Shanghai hosted events focused on transport and logistics, SME’s, One China
AustCham, successful businesses and the Australia-China Business Awards. We also congratulate the Commissioner General, Ms Lyndall Sachs and her team at the pavilion on receiving over 8 million visitors through the door, smashing all targets set.
REWARDING THE BEST IN BUSINESS
AustCham Shanghai were thrilled to host the AustCham Westpac Australia-China Business Awards in Shanghai for the first time in November. The Gala Awards Ceremony was held in front of the Australian Ambassador to China, Dr Geoff Raby, key government officials, special guest Grant Hackett and business executives from across Greater China and Australia. AustCham Shanghai would like to thank all the nominees for making this year’s awards a success and congratulate all the finalists and winners. All the nominees are great Australian businesses and are winners in their own right.
The awards would not have been possible without the generous support of Westpac who have joined us as the major sponsor for the next three years. Thanks also to Austrade for sponsoring the Business Promotion Award and Australia Post for sponsoring the Sustainable Development Award. You will also see the terrific promotion of the awards and the Chambers on Australia Network and for this opportunity we thank the network for their support of AustCham and the Australian business community across the region.
HONING ENGAGEMENT WITH MEMBERS
To ensure AustCham Shanghai is providing the best possible service to members we are launching a membership and research analysis project to gauge membership satisfaction and needs. We will work directly with our members to get a deeper understanding of their needs and how we can better assist them in doing business. We hope members will be frank and fearless with their feedback. Amy Xu has moved from events to undertake this important research project.
We are also looking to re-energise our events program and are pleased that Carol Gong has recently joined the AustCham Shanghai secretariat team to manage the Events and Sponsorship portfolio. With over 140 events held annually Carol will be providing a targeted and engaging program for AustCham Shanghai members and the Australian community based on this feedback.

INDUSTRY COMMITTEE PROFILE
The Transport and Logistics Industry Committee continue to be active in supporting the Chinese government in their drive for more efficient and standardised road transport options. This initiative will not only protect the environment but also make for safer and more efficient trucking across the country. The Committee also organised an exclusive behind the scenes tour to Yangshan Deep Water Port. The port manages twice the quantity of containers as the whole of Australia’s ports put together. Members and friends enjoyed the spectacle of crossing the Donghai Bridge, the second longest ocean bridge in the world at 32.5 km in length, before seeing firsthand the huge five kilometre long dock and huge container terminal. ■
